Experience the Mantanani Islands!
The Mantanani Islands form a small group of three islands off the north-west coast of the state of Sabah, Malaysia, opposite the town of Kota Belud, in northern Borneo. The largest island is Mantanani Besar; the other two are Mantanani Kecil and Lungisan. It is a popular site for recreational diving as there are three nearby dive wrecks dating from the Second World War, as well as being known for its dugongs (wiki).
The fact, that this thin island has never been commercialized, secures its hidden secrets from great number of divers and thus giving you a private but full enjoyment to the tropical island.
The island promises the most diverse marine life with visibility up to 40 meters. Many species of rays flutter around like blue spotted ray and marbled sting ray amongst large schools of fish. Besides that muck diving is excellent with the quiet existence of imperial shrimps, jaw fish ribbon eels, seahorses, pink-eyed gobble and the jaw-dropping blue ringed octopus, amidst nudibranch of all sorts.
One of the main reasons that the Mantanani Islands have recently attracted many visitors, local and tourists alike is because of a special creature called “Dugong” or “Sea Cow” that resides around the islands. Pro Diver offers a day-trip package for an unforgettable experience to swim with the dugong!
How to get there
To get to Mantanani, one would have to take a direct flight from KLIA to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. From Kota Kinabalu, make your way to Kota Belud by road, which takes about an hour by using Taxi. Once in Kota Belud you would have to take a speedboat at rampayan laut jetty, which can take up to another hour to get to Pulau Mantanani.
